Who Am I?

Benno Martens (ben-oh mart-ins)

I’m an urban planner by trade and a writer by passion.

My words about urban planning, design, and development have appeared at CityLab, Belt Magazine, and in The Cleveland Neighborhood Guidebook, and I’m always on the lookout for new stories to tell and opportunities to connect with readers on these subjects.

I’m currently engaged in a writing project on urban planning issues in the Rust Belt, which publishes weekly (read on Medium or subscribe).

I have a Master of City and Regional Planning degree from The Ohio State University and have worked in the community development field for nearly a dozen years. Currently I work at the local government level, which allows me to help effect positive change (however small) in the lives of residents and the community as a whole.

I’ve also written about my first love, baseball, and other professional and college sports for various websites, including Land-Grant Holy Land, Beyond the Box Score, Let’s Go Tribe, Believeland Ball, Call to the Pen, and BT Powerhouse.

If I’m not working or writing, I’ll usually be found watching sports, reading a book, trying to find the best tacos in Cleveland, or hanging out with my 2-year old nephew.

If you’d like to get in touch, or just learn a little bit more about me, feel free to contact me on the form below, professionally on LinkedIn, or through Medium or Twitter.
